Proverbs 3 · a question people ask

The chapter says, "so your barns will be filled with plenty" (3:10). Does honoring the LORD with your wealth bring more wealth?

In the text

The saying reads, "Honor the LORD with your substance, with the first fruits of all your increase; so your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will overflow with new wine" (3:9-10). Like the chapter's other sayings (3:2, 3:4, 3:8), it gives a result. It doesn't say how much, or when, and it names no amount to give. The same chapter says of wisdom, "her good profit is better than getting silver, and her return is better than fine gold" (3:14), and the book says elsewhere, "Better is little, with the fear of the LORD, than great treasure with trouble" (15:16), and "Better is the poor who walks in his integrity than he who is perverse in his ways, and he is rich" (28:6). These notes quote 3:9-10 as it stands, make it no promise of wealth beyond its words, and apply it to no one's money.

Proverbs 3: Trust in the LORD with all your heart

"In all your ways acknowledge him" (3:6) uses the Hebrew verb for know. And six verses after "Happy is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gets understanding" (3:13), the chapter says the LORD founded the earth and established the heavens by those same two, wisdom and understanding (3:19).
