Proverbs 17 · a question people ask

"A bribe is a precious stone in the eyes of him who gives it" (17:8). Does Proverbs approve of bribes?

In the text

Here is the whole saying: "A bribe is a precious stone in the eyes of him who gives it; wherever he turns, he prospers" (17:8) (tap bribe). It says how a bribe looks "in the eyes of him who gives it". It doesn't say that the LORD approves of it, and the same chapter says what a bribe is for: "A wicked man receives a bribe in secret, to pervert the ways of justice" (17:23). The chapter has bribe twice, and it is the same Hebrew word, shochad, both times. The law had said, "You shall not take a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise" (Deuteronomy 16:19). Elsewhere Proverbs says, "he who hates bribes will live" (Proverbs 15:27). It also has sayings about gifts: "A man’s gift makes room for him" (Proverbs 18:16), and "A gift in secret pacifies anger, and a bribe in the cloak, strong wrath" (Proverbs 21:14). The book gives these sayings without saying how they all fit together, and these notes don't apply them to anyone's work or money today.

Proverbs 17: A friend loves at all times

In Hebrew the glad of "He who is glad at calamity" (17:5) and the cheerful of "A cheerful heart makes good medicine" (17:22) are one word. And the friend who "loves at all times" (17:17) is the neighbor of the very next verse (17:18).
