Numbers 27 · a question people ask

What does "he died in his own sin" mean?

Interpretation

The daughters say their father "was not among the company of those who gathered themselves together against the LORD in the company of Korah, but he died in his own sin" (27:3). The text doesn't name a sin, and no other verse that names Zelophehad (26:33, 36:2-11, Joshua 17:3, 1 Chronicles 7:15) says what it was. What every reading agrees on is the daughters' point: their father was not one of Korah's company, whose end Numbers 16 tells (16:32-33). The two main readings below each rest on other verses.

How Christians read it

Where Christians differ, Favor sets out the main views side by side and doesn't pick one.

He died with his generation

Those who hold this view read "his own sin" as the sin of the generation the LORD said would die in the wilderness: "Your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness; and all who were counted of you… who have complained against me" (14:29). The census just before this chapter says, "There was not a man left of them, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun" (26:65). On this reading he died as the others of his generation did, not in a separate judgment like Korah's.

For his own sin, and no one else's

Those who hold this view read the words as saying his death was for himself alone, with nothing passing to his family. They note the law, "The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers. Every man shall be put to death for his own sin" (Deuteronomy 24:16), where "for his own sin" is the same Hebrew word as "in his own sin" in 27:3 (bechet'o). On this reading the daughters are saying that nothing about his death should cut off his name.

From Favor's study of Numbers 27

Numbers 27: They speak right

Five daughters asked why their father's name should be taken away (27:4), and the LORD said they "speak right" (27:7), making their case a law for all Israel (27:11). Told he would die, Moses next asked for a man for the people, so they would not be "as sheep which have no shepherd" (27:17), and the LORD named Joshua (27:18).
