Nehemiah 1 · a question people ask

Nehemiah quotes "the word that you commanded your servant Moses" (1:8). Where are those words?

In the text

Nehemiah doesn't say which passage he means, and these notes don't choose one. Several passages of the Law come close. For "If you trespass, I will scatter you among the peoples" (1:8), Deuteronomy has "The LORD will scatter you among the peoples" (Deuteronomy 4:27), with the same Hebrew verb for scatter and the same "among the peoples"; Leviticus has "I will scatter you among the nations" (Leviticus 26:33), with a different Hebrew verb. For the return and the gathering (1:9), Deuteronomy has "and return to the LORD your God and obey his voice" (Deuteronomy 30:2), and "If your outcasts are in the uttermost parts of the heavens, from there the LORD your God will gather you" (Deuteronomy 30:4); in Hebrew, 30:4 and 1:9 share the words for outcasts, the uttermost part of the heavens, from there and gather. For "the place that I have chosen, to cause my name to dwell there" (1:9), Deuteronomy has "the place which the LORD your God shall choose, to cause his name to dwell there" (Deuteronomy 12:11). And Leviticus 26 has confessing, trespass and remembering close together: "If they confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their fathers, in their trespass which they trespassed against me" (Leviticus 26:40), "then I will remember my covenant with Jacob" (Leviticus 26:42), with the Hebrew verbs Nehemiah uses for confess (1:6), trespass and remember (1:8). Nehemiah's words are close to these, not the same as any one of them.

The verses

“let your ear now be attentive and your eyes open, that you may listen to the prayer of your servant which I pray before you at this time, day and night, for the children of Israel your servants, while I confess the sins of the children of Israel which we have sinned against you. Yes, I and my father’s house have sinned.”
Nehemiah 1:6 · World English Bible

Nehemiah 1:8-9 · World English Bible
“The LORD will scatter you among the peoples, and you will be left few in number among the nations where the LORD will lead you away.”
Deuteronomy 4:27 · World English Bible

Leviticus 26:33 · World English Bible

From Favor's study of Nehemiah 1

Nehemiah 1: Remember the word

Before Nehemiah asks the king for anything, he weeps (1:4) and prays "day and night" (1:6), and asks God to "Remember" the word God himself gave Moses (1:8-9). It is the first "Remember" of a book whose last words are "Remember me, my God, for good" (Nehemiah 13:31).
