Matthew 7 · a question people ask

"Don’t judge" (7:1). Does that mean you may never say that anything is wrong?

In the text

Jesus doesn't define the word in this chapter, so here are the verses around it, in their order. "Don’t judge, so that you won’t be judged. For with whatever judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with whatever measure you measure, it will be measured to you." (7:1-2). Then the speck and the beam: "You hypocrite! First remove the beam out of your own eye, and then you can see clearly to remove the speck out of your brother’s eye." (7:5). Then "Don’t give that which is holy to the dogs" (7:6). A few verses on: "Beware of false prophets" (7:15), and "By their fruits you will know them" (7:16). These are the verses as Jesus gives them. These notes don't say how they fit together, and apply none of them to anyone today.

The verses

““Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravening wolves. By their fruits you will know them. Do you gather grapes from thorns or figs from thistles?”

Matthew 7: Hears and does them

In Matthew 7 one Greek verb runs from 7:12 to 7:26 behind the WEB's do, produce, grow and does: the good tree produces good fruit, the one who enters does the will of his Father, and the wise man hears Jesus's words and does them. And "he taught them with authority, and not like the scribes" (7:29) is, in the Greek, the same words as the end of Mark 1:22.
