Mark 9 · a question people ask

Coming down the mountain, why did he tell them to tell no one "until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead" (9:9)?

In the text

"As they were coming down from the mountain, he commanded them that they should tell no one what things they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead" (9:9). It is the only time in Mark that such a command has an until, and Mark tells what they did with it: "They kept this saying to themselves, questioning what the “rising from the dead” meant" (9:10). Mark has told of commands like it before (1:44, 3:12, 5:43, 7:36, 8:30). Christians read why he said it in more than one way, and chapter 8 sets out the main readings.

The verses

Mark 9: Listen to him

On the mountain the voice said, "This is my beloved Son. Listen to him" (9:7). Below, a father cried, "I believe. Help my unbelief!" (9:24). And in 9:41 Mark gives the word "Christ" from Jesus himself for the first time: whoever gives you a cup of water "because you are Christ’s" will "in no way lose his reward".
