Mark 16 · a question people ask

Mark has a young man in the tomb. What do the other Gospels say?

In the text

Each of the four Gospels tells it in its own words, and here they are side by side. Mark: "Entering into the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe" (16:5). Matthew: "an angel of the Lord descended from the sky and came and rolled away the stone from the door and sat on it" (Matthew 28:2), and "The angel answered the women" (Matthew 28:5). Luke: "two men stood by them in dazzling clothing" (Luke 24:4). John: Mary, at the tomb, "saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain" (John 20:12). Mark calls the one who speaks "a young man" and says no more about who he is. Favor doesn't put the four accounts together or choose between them.

The verses

“Entering into the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe; and they were amazed.”
Mark 16:5 · World English Bible
“Behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from the sky and came and rolled away the stone from the door and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. For fear of him, the guards shook, and became like dead men. The angel answered the women, “Don’t be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus, who has been crucified.”
Matthew 28:2-5 · World English Bible
“While they were greatly perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling clothing.”
Luke 24:4 · World English Bible
“But Mary was standing outside at the tomb weeping. So as she wept, she stooped and looked into the tomb, and she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.”
John 20:11-12 · World English Bible

From Favor's study of Mark 16

Mark 16: He has risen!

At the tomb the young man sends the women to the very place Mary Magdalene had seen him laid (15:47): "See the place where they laid him!" (16:6). And the message names one disciple: "tell his disciples and Peter" (16:7), the Peter who had remembered Jesus's words and wept (14:72). Jesus had said it on the last night: "after I am raised up, I will go before you into Galilee" (14:28).
