Mark 12 · a question people ask

Is there marriage after the resurrection?

In the text

Here is what Jesus said to the Sadducees' question: "For when they will rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven" (12:25). He says it of "when they will rise from the dead" (12:25), and he says nothing more about it in this chapter. Before it he told them, "Isn’t this because you are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God?" (12:24) (tap mistaken), and after it he goes on to "the dead, that they are raised" (12:26). Matthew has "but are like God’s angels in heaven" (Matthew 22:30), and Luke "For they can’t die any more, for they are like the angels and are children of God, being children of the resurrection" (Luke 20:36). These notes add nothing to what the verses say.

The verses

“In the resurrection, when they rise, whose wife will she be of them? For the seven had her as a wife.” Jesus answered them, “Isn’t this because you are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God? For when they will rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. But about the dead, that they are raised, haven’t you read in the book of Moses about the Bush, how God spoke to him, saying, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’?”

Mark 12: Not far from God’s Kingdom

When Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, quoted Moses to him, Jesus answered from Moses too: "I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob", and "He is not the God of the dead, but of the living" (12:26-27). And asked for the greatest commandment, he gave two: love God with everything, and your neighbor as yourself (12:29-31).
