Mark 11 · a question people ask

Does 11:24 mean you will get whatever you pray for?

In the text

Here are the words, in their order. Jesus begins, "Have faith in God" (11:22). He speaks of one who "doesn’t doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says is happening" (11:23). Then, "Therefore I tell you, all things whatever you pray and ask for, believe that you have received them, and you shall have them" (11:24), and straight after, "Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone" (11:25). The chapter says no more about 11:24 than these verses, and these notes neither add to it nor take from it.

The verses

“Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God. For most certainly I tell you, whoever may tell this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ and doesn’t doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says is happening, he shall have whatever he says. Therefore I tell you, all things whatever you pray and ask for, believe that you have received them, and you shall have them. Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone; so that your Father, who is in heaven, may also forgive you your transgressions.”

Mark 11: A house of prayer

In Mark, on the day he came in, Jesus only looked around the temple and went out; the tables were overturned the next day, between the fig tree cursed and the fig tree found withered (11:11-21). And his answer about the withered tree ends with forgiving: "Whenever you stand praying, forgive" (11:25).
