Leviticus 14 · a question people ask
Did someone get leprosy because of a sin?
Leviticus 14 doesn't say. It names no sin the person did; the priest makes atonement for him "because of his uncleanness" (14:19). Elsewhere, the Bible tells of three people struck with leprosy after a wrong: Miriam (Numbers 12:10), Gehazi (2 Kings 5:27) and King Uzziah, "because the LORD had struck him" (2 Chronicles 26:20). It never says every case came that way. When Jesus was asked about a man born blind, "who sinned, this man or his parents" (John 9:2), he answered, "This man didn’t sin, nor did his parents" (John 9:3). That was about blindness, not leprosy.
The verses
““The priest shall offer the sin offering, and make atonement for him who is to be cleansed because of his uncleanness. Afterward he shall kill the burnt offering;”
“The LORD’s anger burned against them; and he departed. The cloud departed from over the Tent; and behold, Miriam was leprous, as white as snow. Aaron looked at Miriam, and behold, she was leprous.”
“He said to him, “Didn’t my heart go with you when the man turned from his chariot to meet you? Is it a time to receive money, and to receive garments, and olive groves and vineyards, and sheep and cattle, and male servants and female servants? Therefore the leprosy of Naaman will cling to you and to your offspring forever.” He went out from his presence a leper, as white as snow.”
“Then Uzziah was angry. He had a censer in his hand to burn incense, and while he was angry with the priests, the leprosy broke out on his forehead before the priests in the LORD’s house, beside the altar of incense. Azariah the chief priest and all the priests looked at him, and behold, he was leprous in his forehead; and they thrust him out quickly from there. Indeed, he himself also hurried to go out, because the LORD had struck him.”
