Leviticus 10 · a question people ask

Why wasn't Aaron allowed to mourn his sons?

In the text

Moses told Aaron, Eleazar and Ithamar, "Don’t let the hair of your heads go loose, and don’t tear your clothes, so that you don’t die, and so that he will not be angry with all the congregation" (10:6). For staying at the door of the Tent, the reason given is their anointing: "You shall not go out from the door of the Tent of Meeting, lest you die; for the anointing oil of the LORD is on you" (10:7). Weeping wasn't forbidden to everyone: "let your brothers, the whole house of Israel, bewail the burning which the LORD has kindled" (10:6). Later Leviticus lets an ordinary priest defile himself for "his relatives that are near to him" (21:2), but the high priest "shall not let the hair of his head hang loose, or tear his clothes" (21:10), "for the crown of the anointing oil of his God is upon him" (21:12).

The verses

“Moses said to Aaron, and to Eleazar and to Ithamar, his sons, “Don’t let the hair of your heads go loose, and don’t tear your clothes, so that you don’t die, and so that he will not be angry with all the congregation; but let your brothers, the whole house of Israel, bewail the burning which the LORD has kindled. You shall not go out from the door of the Tent of Meeting, lest you die; for the anointing oil of the LORD is on you.” They did according to the word of Moses.”

He shall not go out of the sanctuary, nor profane the sanctuary of his God; for the crown of the anointing oil of his God is upon him. I am the LORD.”

Leviticus 10: Those who come near me

Leviticus 9 ends with fire from before the LORD consuming the offering. The same words open 10:2, and this time the fire devours Aaron's sons, who offered fire the LORD "had not commanded them" (10:1). The LORD's word: "I will show myself holy to those who come near me" (10:3). Aaron's first response is silence: "Aaron held his peace" (10:3).
