John 8 · a question people ask

"the truth will make you free" (8:32). Free from what?

In the text

Those who heard him asked much the same: "We are Abraham’s offspring, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How do you say, ‘You will be made free’?" (8:33). Jesus answered, "Most certainly I tell you, everyone who commits sin is the bondservant of sin. A bondservant doesn’t live in the house forever. A son remains forever. If therefore the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed" (8:34-36) (tap bondservant). Those are his own words about it in this chapter, and these notes add nothing to them. He had begun, "If you remain in my word, then you are truly my disciples. You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free" (8:31-32).

The verses

“Jesus therefore said to those Jews who had believed him, “If you remain in my word, then you are truly my disciples. You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” They answered him, “We are Abraham’s offspring, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How do you say, ‘You will be made free’?” Jesus answered them, “Most certainly I tell you, everyone who commits sin is the bondservant of sin. A bondservant doesn’t live in the house forever. A son remains forever. If therefore the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.”

John 8: The light of the world

When the Pharisees told Jesus, "Your testimony is not valid" (8:13), and he answered, "my testimony is true" (8:14), valid and true were the same Greek word. And when they asked how they would be made free (8:33), he answered, "everyone who commits sin is the bondservant of sin" (8:34).
