John 14 · a question people ask

"I will come again and will receive you to myself" (14:3). When, and how?

In the text

Jesus speaks of coming more than once in this chapter. "I will come again and will receive you to myself; that where I am, you may be there also" (14:3). "I will not leave you orphans. I will come to you" (14:18). "Yet a little while, and the world will see me no more; but you will see me" (14:19). "If a man loves me, he will keep my word. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him" (14:23). And he reminds them, "You heard how I told you, ‘I am going away, and I will come back to you.’" (14:28). John 14 gives these sayings in one conversation and doesn't say when each comes about, or how they fit together. These notes set them side by side and don't either.

John 14: In my Father’s house

The homes of "In my Father’s house are many homes" (14:2) and the home of "we will come to him and make our home with him" (14:23) are the same Greek word, and the New Testament has it nowhere else.

In Favor, questions like this come up right where they arise as you read, with the Hebrew and Greek behind the words and how the chapter leads to Jesus.
