Isaiah 55 · a question people ask
"buy wine and milk without money and without price" (55:1). How do you buy without money?
The verse doesn't explain it. It says it twice: "Come, he who has no money, buy, and eat!" and "buy wine and milk without money and without price" (55:1) (tap buy). The next verses go on to listening: "Listen diligently to me, and eat that which is good" (55:2), and "Turn your ear, and come to me. Hear, and your soul will live" (55:3). In Hebrew Listen diligently is the verb shama twice, and Hear in 55:3 is shama again. These notes say no more than the verses say.
The verses
““Hey! Come, everyone who thirsts, to the waters! Come, he who has no money, buy, and eat! Yes, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which doesn’t satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in richness. Turn your ear, and come to me. Hear, and your soul will live. I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David.”
