Isaiah 42 · a question people ask
Is the LORD pictured as a warrior in 42:13?
The verse says what he is like: "The LORD will go out like a mighty man. He will stir up zeal like a man of war. He will raise a war cry. Yes, he will shout aloud. He will triumph over his enemies" (42:13). The next verse gives another picture, in a voice that says I: "Now I will cry out like a travailing woman. I will both gasp and pant" (42:14). Then that voice says, "I will destroy mountains and hills" (42:15), and "I will bring the blind by a way that they don’t know" (42:16). The chapter doesn't name the enemies of 42:13, and these notes name none and apply the verse to no nation, people or conflict today.
