Isaiah 25 · a question people ask
"He will spread out his hands in the middle of it, like one who swims spreads out hands to swim" (25:11). Who is he?
The verse doesn't name him. Just before it, "the LORD’s hand will rest in this mountain" and "Moab will be trodden down in his place" (25:10). The verse doesn't say whether he is the LORD or Moab, and these notes don't choose. What it says plainly comes next: "but his pride will be humbled together with the craft of his hands" (25:11) (tap pride, humbled). Then someone is spoken to as you, again without a name: "He has brought the high fortress of your walls down, laid low, and brought to the ground, even to the dust" (25:12). These notes apply what the chapter says of Moab to no nation or people today.
The verses
“For the LORD’s hand will rest in this mountain. Moab will be trodden down in his place, even like straw is trodden down in the water of the dunghill. He will spread out his hands in the middle of it, like one who swims spreads out hands to swim, but his pride will be humbled together with the craft of his hands. He has brought the high fortress of your walls down, laid low, and brought to the ground, even to the dust.”
