Hebrews 7 · a question people ask
"what further need was there for another priest to arise after the order of Melchizedek, and not be called after the order of Aaron?" (7:11). What does the letter itself say of the Levitical priesthood?
Here are the chapter's own words about that priesthood and the priests it speaks of, and these notes add nothing to them. The question begins with if: "Now if perfection was through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people have received the law)" (7:11). The next verse says, "For the priesthood being changed, there is of necessity a change made also in the law." (7:12). Later the chapter says, "Many, indeed, have been made priests, because they are hindered from continuing by death." (7:23), and "For the law appoints men as high priests who have weakness" (7:28).
The verses
“Now if perfection was through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people have received the law), what further need was there for another priest to arise after the order of Melchizedek, and not be called after the order of Aaron? For the priesthood being changed, there is of necessity a change made also in the law.”
“Many, indeed, have been made priests, because they are hindered from continuing by death.”
“For the law appoints men as high priests who have weakness, but the word of the oath, which came after the law, appoints a Son forever who has been perfected.”
