Genesis 36 · a question people ask
Why are Esau's wives named differently here than in chapters 26 and 28?
Earlier Genesis names Judith, daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath, daughter of Elon the Hittite (26:34), and later Mahalath, daughter of Ishmael, "the sister of Nebaioth" (28:9). Chapter 36 names Adah, daughter of Elon the Hittite; Oholibamah, daughter of Anah; and Basemath, "Ishmael’s daughter, sister of Nebaioth" (36:2-3). Two of the fathers match (Elon; Ishmael, with Nebaioth), and the name Basemath appears in both lists but with a different father. Genesis doesn't say whether these are the same women under other names, and it doesn't explain the difference.
