Genesis 33 · a question people ask

Jacob said he would come to Esau in Seir. Did he?

In the text

Genesis doesn't record it. Jacob says, "I will lead on gently… until I come to my lord to Seir" (33:14). The next verses take him to Succoth (33:17) and then to Shechem (33:18). The text doesn't say whether he meant to go on to Seir later. The next time Genesis shows the brothers together is at their father's burial: "Esau and Jacob, his sons, buried him" (35:29).

The verses

“Isaac gave up the spirit and died, and was gathered to his people, old and full of days. Esau and Jacob, his sons, buried him.”

Genesis 33: Esau ran to meet him

Jacob bowed seven times, and Esau ran, embraced him and wept. Jacob told his brother the children were God's gracious gift, and pressed on him a gift he called, in Hebrew, "my blessing", the very word Esau had used for what Jacob took from him. He settled at Shechem, bought land and built an altar called El Elohe Israel, literally "God, God of Israel".
