Exodus 40 · a question people ask

Were Aaron and his sons anointed in this chapter?

In the text

The LORD commands it here: "You shall bring Aaron and his sons to the door of the Tent of Meeting, and shall wash them with water" (40:12), put the holy garments on Aaron, "and you shall anoint him, and sanctify him" (40:13), and anoint his sons too (40:14-15). Then "Moses did so. According to all that the LORD commanded him, so he did" (40:16). But the step-by-step account that follows (40:17-33) tells of the setting up, the offering and the washing (40:31-32); it doesn't describe the anointing. Leviticus does: "Moses brought Aaron and his sons, and washed them with water" (Leviticus 8:6), "took the anointing oil, and anointed the tabernacle and all that was in it" (Leviticus 8:10), and "poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron’s head, and anointed him, to sanctify him" (Leviticus 8:12). Numbers looks back on "the day that Moses had finished setting up the tabernacle, and had anointed it and sanctified it with all its furniture" (Numbers 7:1).

From Favor's study of Exodus 40

Exodus 40: The glory filled the tabernacle

Exodus 40 says "as the LORD commanded Moses" seven times, and it is Moses who lights the lamps, burns the incense and offers on the altar. "So Moses finished the work" has the same Hebrew verb and noun as God finishing his work in Genesis 2:2. The cloud that covered Sinai covers the tent, and Moses, who once went into that cloud, can't go in (40:35).
