Exodus 39 · a question people ask

Where did a people just out of slavery get gold, jewels and fine linen?

In the text

Exodus answers this itself. Before they left, the LORD said, "every woman shall ask of her neighbor… jewels of silver, jewels of gold, and clothing" (3:22). When they went, "they asked of the Egyptians jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and clothing" (12:35), and "The LORD gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they let them have what they asked" (12:36). For the tabernacle, men and women brought "all jewels of gold" (35:22), "The rulers brought the onyx stones and the stones to be set for the ephod and for the breastplate" (35:27), and the women who were wise-hearted spun and brought "the blue, the purple, the scarlet, and the fine linen" (35:25).

The verses

“I will give this people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, and it will happen that when you go, you shall not go empty-handed. But every woman shall ask of her neighbor, and of her who visits her house, jewels of silver, jewels of gold, and clothing. You shall put them on your sons, and on your daughters. You shall plunder the Egyptians.””

Exodus 39: As the LORD commanded

Seven times the chapter says a piece of the priests' clothing was made "as the LORD commanded Moses" (39:1-31). Then everything is brought to Moses, who sees it was done "as the LORD had commanded" and blesses the people (39:43), in some of the same Hebrew words Genesis uses when God saw, finished and blessed (Genesis 1:31-2:3).
