Ecclesiastes 9 · a question people ask
Who was the poor wise man who delivered the city?
The chapter doesn't say. It names no city, no king and no man, and says nothing of when. It gives the story as something the Preacher saw: "I have also seen wisdom under the sun in this way, and it seemed great to me" (9:13). "There was a little city, and few men within it; and a great king came against it, besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it" (9:14). "Now a poor wise man was found in it, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man" (9:15). In Hebrew poor and wise in 9:15 are the two words of "a poor and wise youth" (4:13) (tap poor). The book doesn't say the two are the same person, and these notes don't. They don't name the man, and they don't make him a picture of anyone.
The verses
“I have also seen wisdom under the sun in this way, and it seemed great to me. There was a little city, and few men within it; and a great king came against it, besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it. Now a poor wise man was found in it, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man.”
“Better is a poor and wise youth than an old and foolish king who doesn’t know how to receive admonition any more.”
