Ecclesiastes 5 · a question people ask

"If you see the oppression of the poor … don’t marvel at the matter" (5:8). Is the Preacher saying that injustice doesn't matter?

In the text

The verse names what is seen: "the oppression of the poor, and the violent taking away of justice and righteousness in a district" (5:8) (tap oppression). What it says is not to be astonished: marvel is tamah, which Brown-Driver-Briggs gives as "be astounded, dumbfounded". Then it gives a reason: "for one official is eyed by a higher one, and there are officials over them" (5:8). In Hebrew official is gavoah, which Brown-Driver-Briggs gives as "high, exalted", and among its senses "exalted in station"; and is eyed is shomer, a form of the verb of 5:1's Guard (tap Guard). The verse doesn't say whether the higher ones stop the wrong or share in it, and these notes don't either. The next verse says, "Moreover the profit of the earth is for all. The king profits from the field" (5:9) (tap profit). The Preacher has spoken of oppression before: "Then I returned and saw all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold, the tears of those who were oppressed, and they had no comforter" (4:1). And earlier still he said, "God will judge the righteous and the wicked" (3:17). These notes don't apply 5:8-9 to any government, ruler or official today.

The verses

“If you see the oppression of the poor, and the violent taking away of justice and righteousness in a district, don’t marvel at the matter, for one official is eyed by a higher one, and there are officials over them. Moreover the profit of the earth is for all. The king profits from the field.”

Ecclesiastes 5: Guard your steps

In Hebrew, the chapter's first command, "Guard your steps" (5:1), and its "you must fear God" (5:7) are the two commands of the book's last words: "Fear God and keep his commandments" (12:13). And the verb of "God occupies him with the joy of his heart" (5:20) is the one behind "to be afflicted with" (1:13).
