Acts 24 · a question people ask

Felix said, "When Lysias, the commanding officer, comes down, I will decide your case." (24:22). Did he decide it?

In the text

The chapter doesn't tell of Lysias coming down, or of any decision. It says Felix "ordered the centurion that Paul should be kept in custody" (24:23), sent for Paul and heard him (24:24), and "sent for him more often and talked with him" (24:26). It ends, "But when two years were fulfilled, Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus, and desiring to gain favor with the Jews, Felix left Paul in bonds." (24:27). These notes add nothing to the chapter's words, and reckon no dates from them.

Acts 24: Which they call a sect

Tertullus called Paul "a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes" (24:5). When Paul answered, the same Greek noun came back in his own words: "according to the Way, which they call a sect, so I serve the God of our fathers" (24:14).
