2 Kings 24 · a question people ask

Was Jehoiachin eighteen or eight when he began to reign?

In the text

2 Kings says, "Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months" (24:8). 2 Chronicles says, "Jehoiachin was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned three months and ten days in Jerusalem" (2 Chronicles 36:9). The two books give different ages, and one gives "three months" where the other gives "three months and ten days". They agree that he reigned in Jerusalem, that "He did that which was evil in the LORD’s sight" (24:9), as 2 Chronicles also says (2 Chronicles 36:9), and that he was taken to Babylon (24:15, 2 Chronicles 36:10). These notes quote both books as they stand and don't try to fit them together.

2 Kings 24: As the LORD had said

The king of Babylon carried Jerusalem away, but the chapter says whose word it was: the bands came "according to the LORD’s word" (24:2), and the treasures went "as the LORD had said" (24:13), the word Isaiah gave Hezekiah (20:17). And Matthew counts Jesus' line by the exile to Babylon: "from the carrying away to Babylon to the Christ, fourteen generations" (Matthew 1:17).
