2 Chronicles 33 · a question people ask

What did Manasseh pray?

In the text

The chapter doesn't give his words. It says, "He prayed to him" (33:13), and it says twice where his prayer was written: "Now the rest of the acts of Manasseh, and his prayer to his God, and the words of the seers who spoke to him in the name of the LORD, the God of Israel, behold, they are written among the acts of the kings of Israel" (33:18), and "His prayer also, and how God listened to his request, and all his sin and his trespass… behold, they are written in the history of Hozai" (33:19). What the chapter does give is how he prayed: "he begged the LORD his God, and humbled himself greatly" (33:12). These notes don't guess what the prayer said.

The verses

“When he was in distress, he begged the LORD his God, and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers. He prayed to him; and he was entreated by him, and heard his supplication, and brought him again to Jerusalem into his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the LORD was God.”

“Now the rest of the acts of Manasseh, and his prayer to his God, and the words of the seers who spoke to him in the name of the LORD, the God of Israel, behold, they are written among the acts of the kings of Israel. His prayer also, and how God listened to his request, and all his sin and his trespass, and the places in which he built high places and set up the Asherah poles and the engraved images before he humbled himself: behold, they are written in the history of Hozai.”

2 Chronicles 33: He humbled himself greatly

2 Kings says Judah was removed "for the sins of Manasseh" (2 Kings 24:3). 2 Chronicles tells what Kings doesn't: carried in chains to Babylon (33:11), he "humbled himself greatly" (33:12), and the LORD "brought him again to Jerusalem into his kingdom" (33:13).
