2 Chronicles 1 · a question people ask

Was it right for Solomon to worship at a high place?

In the text

2 Chronicles gives its reason for Gibeon in the same verse that names the high place. Solomon and the assembly "went to the high place that was at Gibeon; for God’s Tent of Meeting was there, which the LORD’s servant Moses had made in the wilderness" (1:3), and "the bronze altar that Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, had made was there before the LORD’s tabernacle" (1:5). 1 Chronicles had said the same of David's days: "For the LORD’s tabernacle, which Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of burnt offering, were at that time in the high place at Gibeon" (1 Chronicles 21:29), and David had left Zadok and the priests there "to offer burnt offerings to the LORD on the altar of burnt offering continually morning and evening, even according to all that is written in the LORD’s law" (1 Chronicles 16:40). 1 Kings tells the same visit with a line 2 Chronicles 1 doesn't have: "Solomon loved the LORD, walking in the statutes of David his father, except that he sacrificed and burned incense in the high places" (1 Kings 3:3). The honest question in 1 Kings 3 sets out the main ways Christians read 1 Kings 3:2-3, each resting on its verses. These notes quote both books as they stand and don't try to reconcile them.

2 Chronicles 1: Wisdom and knowledge

2 Chronicles opens with the verbs of David's prayer in 1 Chronicles 29, "It is in your hand to make great, and to give strength" (1 Chronicles 29:12). Its first verse says Solomon "was firmly established" and the LORD "made him exceedingly great" (1:1): in Hebrew, chazaq and gadal. And the "riches" and "honor" of that prayer are what God adds at Gibeon (1:12).
