1 Kings 16 · a question people ask
What happened to Hiel's sons?
The verse says only this: "He laid its foundation with the loss of Abiram his firstborn, and set up its gates with the loss of his youngest son Segub" (16:34). It doesn't say how they were lost or how old they were, and these notes don't guess. What it does say is why it is told: "according to the LORD’s word, which he spoke by Joshua the son of Nun" (16:34). After Jericho fell (Joshua 6:20-24), Joshua "commanded them with an oath at that time, saying, “Cursed is the man before the LORD who rises up and builds this city Jericho. With the loss of his firstborn he will lay its foundation, and with the loss of his youngest son he will set up its gates.”" (Joshua 6:26). The chapter doesn't say whether Hiel knew Joshua's words.
