1 Chronicles 8 · a question people ask
Chapter 10 says all Saul's house died together. How does his line go on here?
Chapter 10 says, "So Saul died with his three sons; and all his house died together" (10:6), and names the three: "Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua, the sons of Saul" (10:2). 1 Samuel tells the same day as "So Saul died with his three sons, his armor bearer, and all his men that same day together" (1 Samuel 31:6). Yet 8:33 names a fourth son, Eshbaal, and 8:34-38 gives Jonathan's son Merib-baal and a long line after him; 9:39-44 gives them again just before chapter 10. 2 Samuel tells of a son of Saul and a son of Jonathan who were alive after that day: Abner made "Ishbosheth the son of Saul" king (2 Samuel 2:8), and Jonathan's son "was five years old when the news came about Saul and Jonathan out of Jezreel" (2 Samuel 4:4). 1 Chronicles doesn't say what "all his house" takes in, and this answer doesn't go past what the texts say.
