1 Chronicles 26 · a question people ask
How could plunder repair the LORD's house before Solomon built it?
The chapter says they "dedicated some of the plunder won in battles to repair the LORD’s house" (26:27), and doesn't say when that was done or what was repaired. At this point in the book the temple isn't built: David called for Solomon "and commanded him to build a house for the LORD" (22:6), and said, "I have prepared for the LORD’s house" (22:14). The book also uses "the LORD’s house" of the tent: the gatekeepers "had the oversight of the gates of the LORD’s house, even the house of the tent" (9:23). The verb in 26:27 is chazaq, which Brown-Driver-Briggs gives as "be or grow firm, strong, strengthen"; it is the verb of "they shall repair the damage to the house" in Joash's day (2 Kings 12:5). The chapter doesn't say which house 26:27 means, and these notes don't either.
