Ruth 1: Your God my God
Read Ruth 1:1-22 before you meet.
In a few lines
Ruth 1 turns on one Hebrew word, return. Naomi tells her daughters-in-law to go back, Orpah goes back, and Ruth refuses to turn back: "Your people will be my people, and your God my God" (1:16). Naomi comes home calling herself empty (1:21), with Ruth beside her, "in the beginning of barley harvest" (1:22).
The verse to carry
“Ruth said, “Don’t urge me to leave you, and to return from following you, for where you go, I will go; and where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God my God.”
Ruth 1:16
To talk about
1. Ruth said, "Your people will be my people, and your God my God" (1:16). What has following God cost you, or what might it cost you?
2. Naomi told the whole town, "the LORD has brought me home again empty" (1:21). Where do you feel free, or not free, to say honestly to God and to others how hard things are?
3. Orpah went back, and "Ruth stayed with her" (1:14). Who has stayed with you in a hard season, and who might need you to stay with them now?
