Romans 5: While we were yet sinners
Read Romans 5:1-21 before you meet.
In a few lines
Romans 5 says reigned or reign five times, the same Greek verb each time: death reigned (5:14, 5:17), those who receive the abundance of grace will "reign in life through the one, Jesus Christ" (5:17), and "as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life" (5:21).
The verse to carry
“But God commends his own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 5:8
To talk about
1. "suffering produces perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope doesn’t disappoint us" (5:3-5). The chain begins with suffering and ends with a hope that doesn't disappoint. What do you notice in the reason 5:5 gives for that hope?
2. "while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us" (5:8). How does that change the way you come to God?
3. "we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ" (5:11). What would rejoicing in God look like in your week?
