Psalm 91: The shadow of the Almighty

Read Psalm 91:1-16 before you meet.

In a few lines

Psalm 91 names God four ways in its first two verses, says deliver three times with three different Hebrew verbs (91:3, 91:14, 91:15), and ends with God himself speaking. Its lines about angels (91:11-12) are quoted in the Gospels by the devil, to Jesus, who answered, "You shall not test the Lord, your God" (Matthew 4:7).

The verse to carry

“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.””

Psalm 91:1-2

To talk about

  1. 1. "I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.”" (91:2). The psalm says it out loud. What would it mean for you to say it about something you face this week?

  2. 2. The psalm names fears by night and by day (91:5-6). Which kind of fear is closest to you right now, and what does the psalm say to it?

  3. 3. The devil used a promise from this psalm to tell Jesus to throw himself down, and Jesus answered, "You shall not test the Lord, your God" (Matthew 4:7). What is the difference, for you, between trusting one of God's promises and testing God with it?
