Psalm 82: God judges among the gods
Read Psalm 82:1-8 before you meet.
In a few lines
One Hebrew verb, shafat, runs through Psalm 82 four times: God "judges among the gods" (82:1), they are asked "How long will you judge unjustly" (82:2), they are told "Defend the weak" with the same verb (82:3), and the psalm ends "Arise, God, judge the earth" (82:8). And Jesus quoted its "I said, you are gods" (John 10:34).
The verse to carry
“Defend the weak, the poor, and the fatherless. Maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed.”
Psalm 82:3
To talk about
1. "Defend the weak, the poor, and the fatherless" (82:3). Who near you is weak or without help, and what would standing up for them look like this week?
2. "How long will you judge unjustly, and show partiality to the wicked?" (82:2). Where is it hardest for you to be fair, at home, at work, or anywhere you have a say over others?
3. The psalm ends with a prayer: "Arise, God, judge the earth" (82:8). What would you ask God to set right, and how does it help you to leave the judging with him?
