Psalm 81: Oh that my people would listen

Read Psalm 81:1-16 before you meet.

In a few lines

Psalm 81 begins as a feast-day song and becomes the LORD speaking to his people. One Hebrew verb runs through it five times, hear and listen, and the God who says "I tested you at the waters of Meribah" (81:7) says "Oh that my people would listen to me" (81:13), and ends with "I will satisfy you with honey out of the rock" (81:16).

The verse to carry

“I am the LORD, your God, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt. Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.”

Psalm 81:10

To talk about

  1. 1. "Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it" (81:10). What would it look like for you to open wide to God this week?

  2. 2. "Oh that my people would listen to me" (81:13). What makes it hard for you to listen to God, and when has it been easiest?

  3. 3. The psalm calls people to sing and blow the trumpet on a feast day, then God himself recalls what he did: "You called in trouble, and I delivered you" (81:7). What has God done for you that you'd want to remember out loud with others?
