Psalm 79: Help us, God of our salvation
Read Psalm 79:1-13 before you meet.
In a few lines
Psalm 79 has one Hebrew verb, shafakh, three times: the nations shed blood (79:3), the psalm asks God to pour out his wrath (79:6), and to let vengeance for that blood be poured out (79:10). No other psalm has it more than once. Its reasons turn to God's own name (79:9), and it ends not with the trouble over but with thanks "forever" (79:13).
The verse to carry
“Help us, God of our salvation, for the glory of your name. Deliver us, and forgive our sins, for your name’s sake.”
Psalm 79:9
To talk about
1. The psalm tells God plainly what has happened (79:1-4) before it asks him for anything. When something in your life has been broken, how honestly have you told God about it?
2. "Help us, God of our salvation, for the glory of your name" (79:9). What changes when you ask for help for the sake of God's name, and not only your own?
3. The psalm ends, "We will praise you forever, to all generations" (79:13), without saying its trouble is over. What would it look like for you, or your group, to give thanks in the middle of something unfinished?
