Psalm 7: A righteous judge

Read Psalm 7:1-17 before you meet.

In a few lines

The psalmist asks to be judged "according to my righteousness" (7:8), and ends giving thanks "according to his righteousness" (7:17): in Hebrew one word, with only its ending changed from my to his. And the mischief the wicked conceives (7:14) is, in Hebrew, the same word as the trouble that comes back on his own head (7:16).

The verse to carry

“I will give thanks to the LORD according to his righteousness, and will sing praise to the name of the LORD Most High.”

Psalm 7:17

To talk about

  1. 1. "LORD, my God, I take refuge in you" (7:1). When you feel pursued or spoken against, where do you usually go first?

  2. 2. Before he cries, "Arise, LORD" (7:6), the psalmist says, "if I have done this" (7:3). What would it look like for you to ask that question honestly when someone speaks against you?

  3. 3. "Their minds and hearts are searched by the righteous God" (7:9). Is that a comfort to you, a worry, or both? Why?
