Psalm 61: The rock that is higher than I
Read Psalm 61:1-8 before you meet.
In a few lines
Psalm 61's rock, higher, tent and shelter (61:2-4) are four Hebrew words that Psalm 27:5 also has. Its "strong tower" (61:3) is a pair of Hebrew words found only three times in the Hebrew Bible, once as "The LORD’s name" (Proverbs 18:10). And it opens asking God to hear (61:1), then says, "you, God, have heard" (61:5).
The verse to carry
“From the end of the earth, I will call to you when my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.”
Psalm 61:2
To talk about
1. "From the end of the earth, I will call to you when my heart is overwhelmed" (61:2). When have you felt far away from God? What does calling to him look like for you then?
2. "Lead me to the rock that is higher than I" (61:2). The psalmist asks to be led, not to climb. What in your life right now feels higher than you can reach on your own?
3. "For you have been a refuge for me" (61:3). The psalmist remembers what God has already been to him. What would you name from your own past if you prayed that line?
