Psalm 58: A God who judges the earth
Read Psalm 58:1-11 before you meet.
In a few lines
Psalm 58 opens by asking, "Do you judge blamelessly, you sons of men?" (58:1), and ends with men saying, "there is a God who judges the earth" (58:11): in Hebrew judge, men and the earth come back at both ends. Its cobra doesn't only fail to hear; it stops its ear. And its reward for the righteous is, in Hebrew, fruit.
The verse to carry
“so that men shall say, “Most certainly there is a reward for the righteous. Most certainly there is a God who judges the earth.””
Psalm 58:11
To talk about
1. The psalm asks, "Do you indeed speak righteousness?" (58:1), and answers, "No, in your heart you plot injustice" (58:2). Where is it hardest for you to keep what you say and what is in your heart the same?
2. The cobra "stops its ear" (58:4) and won't listen, however skillful the voice (58:5). What makes you stop your ears to something you need to hear?
3. The psalm ends, "Most certainly there is a God who judges the earth" (58:11). How does knowing that change the way you carry a wrong done to you or to someone else?
