Psalm 54: Save me by your name

Read Psalm 54:1-7 before you meet.

In a few lines

Psalm 54's title quotes the Ziphites' question from 1 Samuel in the same Hebrew, and its last line, "out of all trouble" (54:7), has the same Hebrew words as the end of David's last words to Saul (1 Samuel 26:24). In between, the soul violent men sought is the soul the Lord sustains (54:3-4).

The verse to carry

“Behold, God is my helper. The Lord is the one who sustains my soul.”

Psalm 54:4

To talk about

  1. 1. The title sets this prayer at the time the Ziphites told Saul where David was hiding (54:1; 1 Samuel 23:19, 26:1). When you feel exposed or unsafe, what do you usually do first? Where does prayer come in?

  2. 2. Right after "Violent men have sought after my soul" (54:3), the psalmist says, "Behold, God is my helper" (54:4). What helps you turn from naming what is against you to naming who is for you?

  3. 3. "With a free will offering, I will sacrifice to you. I will give thanks to your name" (54:6). What would a freely given thank-you to God look like for you this week?
