Psalm 51: Create in me a clean heart
Read Psalm 51:1-19 before you meet.
In a few lines
In Hebrew, "Purify me with hyssop" (51:7) is the verb of "I have sinned" (51:4). And "Create in me a clean heart" (51:10) uses the verb of "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth" (Genesis 1:1): nowhere else in the Hebrew Bible is a heart what it creates.
The verse to carry
“Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me.”
Psalm 51:10
To talk about
1. "For I know my transgressions. My sin is constantly before me" (51:3). What makes it hard to say plainly to God what you have done wrong, and what helps?
2. "Restore to me the joy of your salvation" (51:12). Has there been a time when the joy went out of your faith? What brought it back, or what are you still waiting for?
3. "Then I will teach transgressors your ways" (51:13). Has something you were forgiven for helped you to help someone else? What did you have to offer them?
