Psalm 5: In the morning

Read Psalm 5:1-12 before you meet.

In a few lines

In 5:3 the Hebrew has no word for requests: the psalmist sets something in order before the LORD, with the verb of laying wood in order, then watches like a watchman. And one word, rov, stands in 5:7 and 5:10: he comes in by the abundance of God's loving kindness; the others are thrust out in the multitude of their transgressions.

The verse to carry

“LORD, in the morning you will hear my voice. In the morning I will lay my requests before you, and will watch expectantly.”

Psalm 5:3

To talk about

  1. 1. "In the morning I will lay my requests before you, and will watch expectantly" (5:3). After you pray, what does watching for God's answer look like for you, if anything?

  2. 2. The psalmist comes into God's house "in the abundance of your loving kindness" (5:7). What difference does it make to come to God on that ground, rather than on how your week has gone?

  3. 3. The psalm is full of words: the psalmist's words to God (5:1), and others' flattering ones (5:9). Where do your own words most need watching this week?
