Psalm 44: For your sake

Read Psalm 44:1-26 before you meet.

In a few lines

Psalm 44 has words the law and Judges use of turning away from God, and then says, "yet we haven’t forgotten you" (Psalm 44:17), leaving it with the God who "knows the secrets of the heart" (Psalm 44:21). Its "for your sake we are killed all day long" (Psalm 44:22) is what Paul quotes in Romans 8:36, just before he says nothing can separate us from God's love in Christ Jesus.

The verse to carry

“Rise up to help us. Redeem us for your loving kindness’ sake.”

Psalm 44:26

To talk about

  1. 1. "We have heard with our ears, God; our fathers have told us what work you did" (44:1). Who first told you what God has done? What would you want to tell someone after you?

  2. 2. "All this has come on us, yet we haven’t forgotten you" (44:17). When trouble comes that you can't explain, what helps you keep hold of God?

  3. 3. "Wake up! Why do you sleep, Lord?" (44:23). The psalm says hard things to God and still asks him for help. What would it look like for you to pray that honestly this week?
