Psalm 41: Who ate bread with me

Read Psalm 41:1-13 before you meet.

In a few lines

At supper Jesus quotes only half of Psalm 41:9: "He who eats bread with me has lifted up his heel against me" (John 13:18), not "my own familiar friend, in whom I trusted". And the enemies' "he shall rise up no more" (41:8) and the psalmist's "raise me up" (41:10) are one Hebrew verb.

The verse to carry

“As for me, you uphold me in my integrity, and set me in your presence forever.”

Psalm 41:12

To talk about

  1. 1. "Blessed is he who considers the poor" (41:1). Who around you is easy to overlook, and what would it look like to consider them this week?

  2. 2. The psalm speaks of "my own familiar friend, in whom I trusted" (41:9). When trust has been hurt, what has helped you bring it to God rather than carry it alone?

  3. 3. "As for me, you uphold me in my integrity" (41:12). Where do you most need to be held up right now?
