Psalm 35: Evil for good

Read Psalm 35:1-28 before you meet.

In a few lines

The man who prays "Contend, LORD, with those who contend with me" (Psalm 35:1) says that when those who now "reward me evil for good" were sick, he wore sackcloth and fasted for them (Psalm 35:12-13). And his "those who hate me without a cause" (Psalm 35:19) is, in Hebrew, the same words as Psalm 69:4: words Jesus says are written (John 15:25).

The verse to carry

“My tongue shall talk about your righteousness and about your praise all day long.”

Psalm 35:28

To talk about

  1. 1. "They reward me evil for good" (35:12). Have you ever done good to someone and had it paid back with harm? What did you do with it, and what does this psalm do with it?

  2. 2. "When they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth" (35:13). The psalmist mourned for people who later turned on him. Who is someone hard to love that you could pray for this week?

  3. 3. "Tell my soul, “I am your salvation.”" (35:3). If you heard that said to you this week, what would change in how you face the thing that troubles you most?
