Psalm 31: Into your hand

Read Psalm 31:1-24 before you meet.

In a few lines

"Into your hand I commend my spirit" (Psalm 31:5) is first the prayer of a man still asking to be rescued, in a psalm that keeps two hands in view: the LORD's, which holds his times, and his enemies' (Psalm 31:15). And its "For I have heard the slander of many, terror on every side" (Psalm 31:13) is, in Hebrew, the same six words that open Jeremiah 20:10.

The verse to carry

“Into your hand I commend my spirit. You redeem me, LORD, God of truth.”

Psalm 31:5

To talk about

  1. 1. "My times are in your hand" (31:15). What part of your life is hardest for you to leave in the LORD's hand right now? What would it look like to pray this line about it?

  2. 2. "I said in my haste, “I am cut off from before your eyes.” Nevertheless you heard" (31:22). Have you ever decided in a hurry that God had stopped listening? What happened after?

  3. 3. The psalmist says, "I am forgotten from their hearts like a dead man" (31:12), and the psalm ends by speaking to "all you who hope in the LORD" (31:24). Who around you might feel forgotten this week, and how could you remember them?
