Psalm 139: Search me, God
Read Psalm 139:1-24 before you meet.
In a few lines
Psalm 139 opens, "LORD, you have searched me, and you know me" (139:1), and ends asking for the same two verbs: "Search me, God, and know my heart" (139:23). Its woven (139:15) is the verb Exodus uses for the embroiderer, and its word for thoughts comes only twice in the Hebrew Bible: my thoughts (139:2) and your thoughts (139:17).
The verse to carry
“Search me, God, and know my heart. Try me, and know my thoughts. See if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way.”
Psalm 139:23-24
To talk about
1. "LORD, you have searched me, and you know me" (139:1). Is being fully known by God more of a comfort or more of a discomfort to you right now, and why?
2. The psalmist names heaven, Sheol, the dawn and the uttermost parts of the sea, and says the LORD is there (139:8-10). When has it mattered to you that there is nowhere you could go from God?
3. "Search me, God, and know my heart" (139:23). What would it look like for you to pray these words this week?
