Psalm 116: I love the LORD

Read Psalm 116:1-19 before you meet.

In a few lines

In Hebrew, Psalm 116 opens with I love, and the LORD's name comes after listens: the LORD is named as the one who listens. Asked what he will give the LORD, the psalmist first says he will take "the cup of salvation" (116:13). And Paul quotes 116:10's "I believed" in the sentence that speaks of "he who raised the Lord Jesus" (2 Corinthians 4:14).

The verse to carry

“I love the LORD, because he listens to my voice, and my cries for mercy. Because he has turned his ear to me, therefore I will call on him as long as I live.”

Psalm 116:1-2

To talk about

  1. 1. "What will I give to the LORD for all his benefits toward me?" (116:12). What would you name among his benefits to you this year, and what would you like to give back?

  2. 2. "I believed, therefore I said, “I was greatly afflicted.”" (116:10). Is it easier for you to hide what is hard or to say it out loud to God? Why?

  3. 3. "Return to your rest, my soul, for the LORD has dealt bountifully with you" (116:7). The psalmist speaks to his own soul. What would you say to yours this week?
