Psalm 10: Why do you stand far off?

Read Psalm 10:1-18 before you meet.

In a few lines

Psalm 10 lets the wicked speak his heart, then answers him to God with his own verbs: "God has forgotten" (10:11) meets "Don’t forget the helpless" (10:12); "He will never see it" (10:11) meets "But you do see" (10:14); and "God won’t call me into account" (10:13) meets "seek out his wickedness" (10:15), one Hebrew verb, darash.

The verse to carry

“But you do see trouble and grief. You consider it to take it into your hand. You help the victim and the fatherless.”

Psalm 10:14

To talk about

  1. 1. The psalmist asks, "Why do you stand far off, LORD?" (10:1), and he asks it of the LORD himself. When have you had a question like that, and did you bring it to God or keep it to yourself?

  2. 2. The wicked says in his heart, "He will never see it" (10:11). Where are you most tempted to live as though God doesn't see?

  3. 3. The psalm ends with the LORD hearing "the desire of the humble" (10:17), "to judge the fatherless and the oppressed" (10:18). Who near you is easy to overlook, and what might remembering them look like this week?
