Proverbs 9: Two tables
Read Proverbs 9:1-18 before you meet.
In a few lines
Wisdom and the foolish woman call the same people with the very same words: "Whoever is simple, let him turn in here" (9:4, 9:16). One table leads to "live" (9:6), the other to "the depths of Sheol" (9:18). And the foolish woman calls to "those who pass by, who go straight on their ways" (9:15).
The verse to carry
“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom. The knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”
Proverbs 9:10
To talk about
1. Wisdom and the foolish woman call the same people with the same words (9:4, 9:16). Why do you think a wrong invitation can sound so much like a good one?
2. "Reprove a wise person, and he will love you" (9:8). Think of a time someone corrected you well. What made it possible to hear it?
3. "Stolen water is sweet. Food eaten in secret is pleasant" (9:17). Why do you think what is hidden or forbidden can seem sweeter, and what does 9:18 say the guest doesn't know?
